Current projects

  • Local cohort studies: patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery have risk and outcome data measured and analysed with the aim of assessing the validity of risk prediction methods (both modelling and clinical measures of functional capacity such as exercise testing) and improving quality of care
  • We are leading the evaluation of a novel perioperative medicine service at the UCH@Westmoreland Street site (POM-SHIP - http://www.health.org.uk/programmes/innovating-improvement/projects/peri-operative-medicine-service-high-risk-surgery )
  • We are conducting and collaborating on a number of external validation studies of the Surgical Outcome Risk Tool (www.sortsurgery.com) which was developed in conjunction with NCEPOD (www.ncepod.org.uk)
  • We are the academic partner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists' National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (www.nela.org.uk)
  • We are working with international collaborators and the NIAA-HSRC on the COMET-COMPAC and STEP initiatives to develop a core outcome set and standardised endpoints for clinical trials in perioperative medicine (http:www.comet-initiative.org/studies/details/632?result=true ); trainee lead Dr Olly Boney
  • We have developed an online learning resource for Improvement Science in Perioperative Care - the PRISM website; trainee lead Dr Maria Chazapis
  • We are partners in the UCL Perioperative Medicine Masters course ( https://www.ucl.ac.uk/surgery/courses/msc-perioperative-medicine ) - developing content and supervising dissertation projects
